Dating from the early Maya Classic period, approximately 320 A.D. The intricate engravings on this plate are an extraordinary example of Mayan art and proof of the excellence of their craftsmanship.
It must have been part of a governor’s belt, like the one worn by the figure shown on the front side of the piece who, judging by his clothes and the staff of the two-headed snake he is carrying, represents a Mayan king. At his feet, prostrate, a victim destined to be sacrificed during the crowning ceremony.
The hieroglyphs on the backside refer to Tikal and indicate the date of the king’s coronation. A Magnificent piece, today housed in the Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde, Leiden, Holland.
The dimensions of the piece are:
Width: 8.5 cms; Height: 22 cms; and Depth: 1 cm.
