A magnificent mosaic piece found in Tikal, Guatemala, and dating, from the late Classic Period. This piece portraits the ruler Hasaw Chaan Kawil, architect of genius , who brought Tikal to its finest hour, who achieves immortality with this Jade mosaic portrait jar, buried with him about A.D. 730. found in his vaulted tomb under the Temple of the Giant Jaguar, the jar bears glyphs that reveal his identity.
To fashion the treasures, Maya lapidaries drilled hole in each of the polished plaques – 900 in all – applied resin glue and pegged them to wooden cylinders. A tiny Jade plug covered each wooden nail.
