However, by some of its traits, we know that it must be several centuries older. The rectangular eyes, the shape of the eyebrows and other features evoke Olmec tradition. The eyes certainly had shell or jade incrustations.
The whole appearance of the figure is that of a priest. It has been speculated that it could actually represent the sun god itself. If this were the case, it would be one of the earliest representations of this God.
The replica dimensions are Width: 7.5 cms; Height: 17.5 cms and Depth: 6 cms.

The intricate engravings on this plate are an extraordinary example of Mayan art and proof of the excellence of their craftsmanship.
It must have been part of a governor’s belt, like the one worn by the figure shown on the front side of the piece who, judging by his clothes and the staff of the two-headed snake he is carrying, represents a Mayan king. At his feet, prostrate, a victim destined to be sacrificed during the crowning ceremony.
The hieroglyphs on the backside refer to Tikal and indicate the date of the king’s coronation. A Magnificent piece, today housed in the Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde, Leiden, Holland.
